Leftover Lover

You're sitting on the stairs again
Letting your boots muddy up the carpet around you
Staining and saturating it
So it won't forget your presence so soon
Even after you go
Even after you leave
Dark splotches will mark that space
Two watery footprints will mark your last place
Yet I cannot feel you through them
Or hear your jaded sighs
But I can feel the emptiness without you there
I can feel the longing in those footsteps
Their desperation for you to be there matches mine
And sense your wanting to be gone
Your craving to escape
In those impatient footsteps

And I'll always wonder

Who wears their leaving shoes
If they're intending to stay the night
