Unconquered

One moment could have changed things
For you and me
On this train
But this guilt clings to my bones
Like the dampness that hangs in the early December air
Like my wanting to rest my head on your shoulder
And I swear every person around me can see
There is ice where my eyes used to be
Because it was supposed to be you and me
And it isn't
There's permafrost on my heart
And my mind
I can't think
And I can't feel
And desperation is clawing at my throat
Telling me to spit it out

Because it isn't
And we aren't
But we were supposed to be
